Frass, what is it
Frass is essentially worm poo, yup poo makes good fertiliser ! It is produced by mealworms, the larvae of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor, a species of darkling beetle and looks very like fine grit. It's a good thing we don't mind bugs !
We pride ourselves on feeding the mealworms on good quality grain and carrots, and source and buy as locally as possible from independent businesses.
The Benefits of N-Boost Frass
Over the last few years there has been a great interest in the benefits of using insect frass in the gardening world, especially among the Giant Veg, Competition Show Growers and Hydroponic Growers, where they have been seeing great results from adding frass into their compost/feed mixture.
Frass not only helps your plants gain a great root system it also helps your plants immune system. Frass contains something called Chitin, which shocks the plants into thinking it is under attack from insects, after the initial shock the plants defense system comes into action.
By activating its defences this makes the plant stronger to try and combat any future insect attack.
N-Boost is a very versatile product and can be used in several different ways:
N-Boost Frass can be added to your potting mix; Add 5ml per ltr of compost for seeds and cuttings
Add 10ml per ltr of compost for established plants
Add 400gms for 250-300ltr of compost
N-Boost Frass can be used as a foliar spray; add 5ml per ltr of cooled boiled water, stir for approx 1 minute, then strain to remove the sediment ( frass is not totally soluble) slowly pour into a spray bottle and use immediately.
N-Boost Frass can be used as a top dressing by sparsely sprinkling over beds and borders and then raked/watered in.
When used to top dress potted plants use 1 x 20-40ml per 10ltr pot.
N-Boost Frass can be used as a hydroponic additive along side your other nutrient regime. Mix 1-2 tbsp per gallon.
When using any frass based/powder type product please follow the basic guidelines; Use in a well ventilated area., wash hands after use, or wear gloves., do not inhale or digest.
